Here are some of the exciting culinary trends leading the way on this year’s list:
Oodles of noodles. Green, purple, multi-colored noods—this year, chefs have unleashed their artistry on the beloved staple. You’ll find their latest creations at highly praised ramen shops such as Menya Rui (#2) in St. Louis; Michelin-recognized Menya Hosaki (#59) in Washington, DC; and Lucky Cat Ramen (#62), hidden inside a grocery store in Portland, Oregon. In Hawaii, rainbows of noodles are crafted daily from local produce at Adela’s Country Eatery (#7), while luxe, uni-topped Japanese noodles lure high-rolling foodies to Shigotonin Tapas & Sake Bar (#33) in Las Vegas.
New Latin tastes. Yelpers have always loved the bold flavors of Latin food, but now, they’re beating a path to places serving plant-based versions of Mexican classics—like Tucson’s Tumerico (which ranked #1 both nationally and on our Southwest list for vegan Mexican cuisine), Las Vegas’s Milpa (#22), and Florida’s Shaker & Peel (#80). Foodies are also snagging seats at such fusion hotspots as Sabores Tapas Bar (#48) near Washington, DC, for Spanish-Latin small plates and California wine country’s Guiso Latin Fusion (#32) for Salvadorean-Caribbean specialties.
K-food in the spotlight. Asian cuisines from every region are as popular as ever, but Korean fusion restaurants are really having a moment. Yelpers are giving high ratings to places like Los Angeles’s Broken Mouth (#6), the Korean-Hawaiian spot that was #1 on last year’s list, as well as Reno’s Arario Midtown (#26), which introduced Bulgogi Pasta to Northern Nevada, and Tá Jóia (#28) in Bothell, Washington, a Korean-Japanese-Brazilian spot known for its house spicy chicken and Seattle-style teriyaki.
The Sun Belt is hot! Arizona, Florida, and Texas are turning up the heat—the 3 states account for 30% of this year’s rankings. Florida Yelpers are talking up Orlando’s standing-room-only sushi hotspot EDOBOY (#44). Pizza lovers in Boca Raton dig the creative sourdough-crust pies at How Ya Dough’n (#70). Phoenix foodies pile on stars for multiple-year award-winner Cocina Madrigal (#14), while San Antonians line up for the best Philly cheesesteaks in Texas at tiny Gino’s Deli Stop N Buy (#9).
More than anything, folks just want to go out and have a good time in 2024! They’re enjoying Shakespeare-themed pies at Much Ado About Pizza (#51) in Northern California, free chocolate-chip cookies at Zenaida’s Cafe (#25) in Las Vegas, and show-stopping cocktails at 1920s Shanghai-themed CHILI (#47) in New York City.

1. Tumerico, Tucson, Arizona

Vegetarian Mexican cuisine even a meat-eater could love? Vegans and carnivores alike are raving about Tumerico’s inventive plant-based fare, which racked up 5-star reviews this year and snagged the #1 slot on Yelp’s Top 100 Southwest Restaurants list in 2023. This is “not vegetarian food that happens to be great—it’s great food that happens to be vegetarian,” says Yelper Kate S.
James Beard Award semifinalist Wendy Garcia is the chef-owner and culinary wizard behind the popular Tucson cafe. “When I opened Tumerico, I wanted people to try traditional Mexican food, but vegetarian and vegan,” says Wendy, who grew up on a farm in Hermosillo, Mexico, making salsas, tamales, and other favorites from handed-down recipes. “It’s all about those recipes I made with mom, dad, and grandma—tamales, chilaquiles, enchiladas, barbacoa—whatever Mexican dish you can think of, we can make [a vegetarian version] at Tumerico.”
Take, for example, the flavor-rich salsas and jackfruit carnitas—secret ingredients Wendy substitutes for meat in her Cuban Tacos and Al Pastor Tacos—that Yelpers say taste “like the real deal.” She entrusts only 2 prep cooks with the salsa recipes, the soul of every dish. And her mole sauce is a Yelper favorite—Wendy’s takes 4 hours to prepare from dark chocolate, local mesquite flour, cashews, and spices.
The chalkboard menu changes daily based on what’s in season—for example, salsa made from Tucson-grown chiltepin chiles and pitaya (Mexican dragon fruit) or nopalitos (made from prickly pear cactus, available May to September). “I like to use what we have,” says Wendy, who sources produce from the Heirloom Farmers Market in Rillito Park. This strategy delights Yelpers like Nicole B., who says she loves being able to “try something new every time I go in.”
From a folding table and a cooler of her tamales at a local farmers market, Wendy grew her following and, in 2016, opened Tumerico on 6th Street (followed by a 2nd location, Tumerico on 4th). Wendy’s tamales (filled with jackfruit carnitas, green olives, carrots, jalapeno, potato, and red chile salsa) are an homage to her grandmother. “I love my customers. I love my regulars,” she says. “It’s all about making them feel like family—like home.”
Wendy also owns Tucson’s La Chaiteria, #68 on this list.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: While the menu rotates, some items are always available, including Cuban Tacos (jackfruit carnitas with garlic cilantro sauce, cashew crema, and salsa); Al Pastor Tacos (2 tacos with plant-based carnitas, pineapple, and adobo sauce); and the Ropa Vieja Plate (plant-based carnitas with cilantro sauce and mushrooms).
Yelpers say: “I was hesitant to try this place since I saw it was vegetarian and vegan—I really love meat—but WOW. This place is good. I got the Ropa Vieja Plate and the Tamale Plate. I’ve had so many tamales, but this was easily one of the top 3 I’ve ever had. I’m not sure how the masa could be so good without any lard mixed in. The vegan carnitas were super flavorful, as well. The person who took my order was really patient and recommended both dishes to me.” —Yelp Elite Brandon L.

2. Menya Rui, St. Louis, Missouri

Chef-owner Steven Pursley trained for 3 years in Japanese ramen shops to create St. Louis’s own “noodle haven.” The small, 24-seat restaurant—named Menya (noodle shop) Rui (Steven’s given name)—serves more than 200 daily bowls of “rich and decadent” broth loaded with “cooked-to-perfection” noodles. Its popular pork shoyu ramen features an alchemy of chintan broth (clear chicken soup), tare (a soup flavoring made with 3 kinds of soy sauce), and rendered pork fat. “It’s like they gathered flavor from every corner of the universe and poured it into that bowl,” writes Yelper Sean P. The staff works 8-hour shifts with a Japanese-imported machine to meet the demand for these “chewy” creations. “We’re just constantly cranking out noodles,” Steven says.
A native of St. Louis, Steven fell in love with ramen during frequent childhood visits to Japan. In 2014, he returned to that country to apprentice at noodle shops, later running ramen pop-ups out of his US apartment while saving up for his own restaurant. Since opening Menya Rui in April 2022, Steven has been named Food & Wine’s “Best New Chef” and almost always has a line out the door. Menya Rui is first-come, first-served, dine-in only, and customers are encouraged to slurp quickly. (The average Japanese person eats ramen in 5–10 minutes, according to the restaurant’s website.) “Don’t expect to stay for a long meal, but you can expect a delicious bowl of ramen in a unique, high-energy, cozy space,” advises Yelp Elite Mary Z. Steven’s tip? Keep your party small for faster seating.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Pork shoyu and chicken shoyu (both with pork shoulder and ramen toppings chasyu and menma); Karaage (Japanese fried chicken) that’s “I-can’t-stop-thinking-about-it good”; and spicy, sesame-laden Brothless Tantanmen—thick noodles topped with ground pork and tossed in chili oil, sesame paste, and house shoyu. Or try Steven’s favorite, Tsukemen (dipping-style ramen served with vinegary scallop broth).
Yelpers say: “My latest obsession! I’ve practically become a resident. My personal happy dance inducer is the Pork Shoyu ramen with an added egg. The broth deserves a standing ovation. The noodles are handmade in-house with lots of love, making them the rock stars of ramen.” —Yelp Elite Sean P.
3. Sunny Side Kitchen, Escondido, California

Crispy, cheese-encrusted grilled sandwiches may be the draw, but they’re not the only reason in-the-know locals flock to this coastal cafe for breakfast and brunch (the most important meals in Southern California). Sunny Side’s husband-and-wife team, Kate and Bob Carpenter, make customers feel at home, from the mismatched vintage chairs to a huge menu of creative comfort foods, homemade soups, and “drool-worthy” desserts. Yelpers start their day with The Works (egg, bacon, avocado, and Havarti and muenster cheeses on Bread & Cie’s sourdough, toasted with herbs and “super crispy” parmesan in a “genius” bit of sandwich alchemy). A lunch favorite is the Gourmet Grilled Cheese panini with a “nice, crispy exterior and a gooey, cheesy inside.” Swap sourdough for a gluten-free option on any sandwich, or sample Sunny Side’s selection of crustless quiches, loaded with green chiles or artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes. Pair it with strawberry lemonade, handmade to order. “We consider ourselves a small-batch place and try to handcraft as much as we can,” Kate says.
Sunny Side Kitchen started as a 2nd career for the couple. A former food writer, Kate pivoted from interviewing chefs to selling her own baked goods and paninis at local farmers markets before opening the snug, 660-square-foot storefront in 2015. “We don’t want to get any bigger,” Bob says. “Having such a small space, people get to know us,” Kate adds.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: The Works breakfast sandwich; Meatloaf Panini (from Bob’s family recipe, with house-made sweet-and-spicy ketchup and 3 cheeses on sourdough bread); and Tuscan Chicken Panini (oven-roasted rosemary and citrus chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh spinach, roasted tomato aioli, and Havarti, muenster, and parmesan cheeses on sourdough). Gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options available.
Yelpers say: “Such a cute little shop with the best vibes. Bonus: There are tons of gluten-free options. We split The Works breakfast sammie, and thank goodness we did. It was huge and tasty. The sourdough with the seasoning and cheese on the bread was toasted to perfection and mouth-watering. The tropical, herbal iced tea was so flavorful and well-brewed. The gluten-free, white chocolate raspberry muffin was such a nice treat too.” —Yelp Elite Alicia K.

4. GS Cafe and Ethiopian Cuisine, Covina, California

If you love Ethiopian food—or are game to try it—this mom-and-pop cafe should be on your “go” list. Yelpers voted it one of the Top Places to Eat in San Gabriel Valley and, now, to the top of this year’s US list. Located in a strip mall east of Los Angeles, the family-run restaurant serves heaping, shareable platters of “real comfort food” in a bamboo-paneled interior adorned with Ethiopian art.
“Fluffy, light, fresh, and mildly sour injera”—a fermented, pancake-like flatbread that you use to dip, wrap, and scoop up meat and veggies—comes with every entree. (Tip: Ethiopian food is eaten with the hands, instead of utensils, and you can always ask for extra injera to scoop up your meal.) Fans recommend the GS Platter, which comes with “melt-in-your-mouth tender” Doro Wot (chicken stew), Key Wot (beef stew), and 8 vegetarian side dishes—enough for 2–3 people. “This tiny hole-in-the-wall serves one of the best Ethiopian platters I’ve had,” says Yelper Jimmy L.
The drinks are beloved, too: The Tej (Ethiopian honey wine) is “sweet and a great contrast to the stewed entrees,” while the Ethiopian Smoothie features a colorful strata of avocado, mango, and strawberry. There’s often a line to be seated, but Yelpers say “it’s well worth the wait.”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: GS Platter; Awaze Tibs (grilled beef marinated in Ethiopian chili sauce and seasoned Ethiopian herb butter); and Misir Wot (red lentil stew seasoned with onions and traditional Ethiopian spices).
Yelpers say: “The food is just delicious! If you dine in, expect you may be waiting to be seated as the place tends to get full. Food is fresh and finger-licking good. If you’ve never tried Ethiopian food, staff will take time to explain the multiple dishes, how to eat the food, and recommendations. Husband’s favorite dish is the Doro Wot, while mine includes red and yellow lentils and string beans.” —Yelp Elite Alexis M.
5. Fratellino, Coral Gables, Florida

Classic Italian dishes and homemade pastas have earned this Coral Gables stunner nearly 1,500 5-star reviews, top-10 rankings on best of Florida lists in 2022 and 2023, and now a coveted spot on this year’s US list. Third-generation restaurateur Beto DiCarlo has mastered the formula for “exceptional food, impeccable service, and beautiful ambiance” at this white-tablecloth restaurant “reminiscent of a cozy trattoria.”
Family photos adorn the walls, and the menu showcases Beto’s family recipes, such as his father’s signature Ossobuco Alla Milanese—veal shank that’s “fall-of-the-bone” tender and served over a creamy champagne risotto. Choose from one of Fratellino’s homemade pastas (fettuccine, cannelloni, pappardelle, and gnocchi made in-house) or seaside favorites like the imported Chilean Sea Bass, “pan-seared to perfection” and bathed in a lemon, white wine, and butter sauce. Yelper Ginger S. sums it up: “My husband and I are foodies… he’s part Italian and has spent a lot of time in Italy, and this is the best Italian food we’ve ever had. Ever. Every dish was a culinary masterpiece.” Top it all off with tiramisu—if you dare: It “ruined me for all other tiramisu,” she adds.
The beating heart of Fratellino, Beto is an “unexpected delight” who typically works the dining room, greeting guests, and recommending dishes. “It’s a very personal service where we make everybody feel like family,” he says.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Sea Bass; Burratina (homemade burrata mozzarella); and Fettuccine Alla Papalina (homemade pasta with prosciutto di Parma, shiitake mushrooms, and green peas in a light cream sauce).
Yelpers say: “The warmth, the charm, the people, the food… this place has it all. Beto is a wonderful host and makes people feel at home, as if you are family. Main courses we tried were the seafood linguini special, the Ossobucco, Lasagna, Fettuccine Papalina, Vitello Ai Tre Funghi, and the lobster ravioli special. All of them were amazing.” —Yelp Elite Jesena M.

6. BROKEN MOUTH | Lee’s Homestyle, Los Angeles, California

Since debuting at #1 on last year’s Top 100 list, Chef Tim Lee continues to wow Los Angeles diners with “comfort food” from his Oahu childhood. Yelpers-in-the-know agree that Broken Mouth’s Korean-Hawaiian food “tastes like a home-cooked meal—warm and made with love.” “I want them to taste a piece of where I come from, from my home,” says Tim, who identifies as “Korean by blood, Hawaiian at heart.” Diners get a taste of both cuisines with Lee’s famous Meat Jun—thinly sliced ribeye marinated for 24 hours, battered and pan-fried until crispy yet “tender and full of flavor”—and served with a “magical” soy vinegar dipping sauce. “I still think about this meal,” says Yelp Elite Alyssa C.
The plate lunches—a popular Hawaiian “combo plate” with white rice, macaroni salad, and an entree—come with a Korean twist: purple rice and Korean greens, or Tim’s take on macaroni salad, a “delicious and creamy” Potato-Mac salad with potatoes and boiled egg. For a quick snack, try the Spam Musubi (purple rice wrapped sushi-style in seaweed), which Tim’s dad taught him to make for school lunches. The chef thanks his family for his love of food, which he shares with customers whenever he can. “The personal touch is evident—[Chef Tim] remembered us on our second visit!” says Austin H. Order at the counter for takeout or table seating in a bustling downtown LA food hall.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Spam Musubi; Plate Lunch with Meat Jun, Teri Chicken, or Garlic Shrimp (pan-fried in garlic butter).
Yelpers say: “First off, the vibes here are a perfect blend of Los Angeles swagger and charming Hawaiian hospitality. Now, let’s talk about the Beef Plate—a true star on the menu. This dish is a master class in flavor. The beef was cooked to perfection, tender, and seasoned just right. The sauce that comes with it is divine. The sides added a delightful kick that made every bite an experience.” — Austin H.

7. Adela’s Country Eatery, Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii

Colorful noodles made with fresh Hawaiian produce have earned this tiny takeout more than 2,500 5-star reviews and a top-10 ranking on Yelp’s Top 100 list for the 2nd year in a row. Owner Millie Chan and her daughter Elizabeth launched Adela’s in 2019 as a way to repurpose excess produce, such as Okinawan sweet potatoes; ulu (or breadfruit), a starchy vegetable similar to a potato; and moringa (or malunggay), a green leaf that gives the noodles a vibrant hue. The produce is sourced from nearby farms and even neighbors’ backyards by Richard Chan, Adela’s agriculture and community outreach director. “It turns into a bit of a harvest party because sometimes we help cut trees for the moringa,” Elizabeth says.
Create your own noodle plate with a choice of 6 homemade noodles, 10 sauces, and 9 toppings, such as the “tender and juicy” short ribs, “perfectly fatty and flavorful” lechon (pork belly), and garlic shrimp. “The taro noodles were perfectly cooked with a nice chew,” writes Yelp Elite Andrea G.
In-the-know Yelpers suggest calling ahead, then taking their meals to eat at nearby Kāneʻohe Beach Park. Although Adela’s has skyrocketed in popularity since its Top 100 ranking on Yelp last year, the team still prioritizes personal service; many customers are regulars who know Millie by name. “We try not to lose sight of the fact that we are a small, artisan, family business,” Elizabeth says.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Braised Short Ribs (served with garlic green beans); Lechon Malunggay pasta; Taro Pasta (with shrimp, luau leaves, and mushrooms in a coconut cream sauce); Okinawan Ube Sweet Potato Pasta (with lechon and garlic); and Ube Cheesecake made with the sweet purple yam.
Yelpers say: “Everything we ordered was delicious, but if I was forced to pick, it would be the Lechon Malunggay pasta. Pasta was fresh, everything was flavorful, and there were good portions. Didn’t really have room left but we went for the famous cheesecakes as well. Hot tip for out-of-towners: Order in advance, as it’ll be about a 35–45-minute wait.” —Yelp Elite Michael C.

My husband and I got the Manwich and the Hollywood Tremor as well as the clam chowder. Everything tasted super fresh and the flavors of both sandwiches were very unique. The Hollywood Tremor had a slight spiciness to it that worked. The clam chowder was also very tasty. Highly recommend!” —Jarely R.

Deep in the heart of Texas, there’s an unassuming mini-mart making award-winning Philly cheesesteaks. Locals line up daily for this fan favorite, featuring “melt-in-your-mouth” ribeye, Sorrento provolone cheese, jalapenos, bell peppers, and onions sauteed in spices for 24 hours—tucked into “warm and soft” bread from local Uwe’s bakery. The lineup includes mouthwatering deli sandwiches, burgers, and original creations, such as the Smoke Stack (hickory-smoked turkey and bacon crisped on a flat-top grill, then topped with melty, smoked provolone, and drizzled with smoked chipotle). “These sandwiches are delicious,” says Yelp Elite Susan C. “I get why they’re rated so highly.”
Owner Aleem Chaudhry perfected his sandwich-making skills at a Brooklyn, New York, deli in the ’90s. “[The chef] showed me that there’s art-making in a sandwich. It’s not just thrown together,” he says. When he opened Gino’s in 2006, he made a few tweaks for Texas tastes. “When you’re in San Antonio, you can’t get away from jalapenos,” he says. “We started putting jalapenos on everything.” Once a gas station and convenience store, Gino’s Deli is now a “hidden gem” with indoor seating.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Philly Cheese Steak; Smoke Stack; and The Steak Italian (quarter-pound ribeye steak, ham, pepperoni, American and provolone cheese, and the works on a fresh hoagie roll).
Yelpers say: “We tried their Philly Cheese Steak, Smoke Stack, Rabbi Scott Style [ribeye steak], and Pastrami sandwiches. Everything. Was. On. Point! I’m convinced there isn’t a single bad thing on the menu. And for so many options, that’s impressive for how consistent their excellent quality is across the board. Plus, generous meat portions on every sandwich really set the bar high.” —Yelp Elite David C.

I usually don’t eat sandwiches, much less both pieces of bread, but this was definitely not your average sandwich.” —Chau C.
11. Haywood Smokehouse, Dillsboro, North Carolina

Barbecue lovers drive from near and far to this North Carolina family-run spot, which ranked #1 on Yelp’s Top Brisket Spots in the US and Canada. Here’s why: Haywood is not your average BBQ joint. Slow cooked 14–20 hours and hickory-smoked in pits, Joe’s chopped pork, ribs, and brisket are the stars of the show. (“Best brisket in recent memory. Wow. The smoke flavor was just enough and the spice was delicious,” says Yelper Thomas B.) Sides range from such Southern staples as collard greens and mac and cheese to Texas favorites like baked beans and Texas toast. And while most of Haywood’s perfectly smoked meats don’t need sauce, you might be enticed to try one of the 7 house-made versions, including regional favorites like mustard-based Sweet Carolina and Georgia Fire or Haywood-unique blends like Strawberry Chipotle. The staff are especially helpful and will remember details about your previous visits.” —Steven Jon K.
13. Express Deli, Brook Park, Ohio

Corned beef gets the royal treatment at this Cleveland-area deli. The TLC this family lavishes on the city’s favorite cold cut has earned them a loyal following for the past 25 years. “I’ve been coming to this deli since I was a little girl,” says Yelper K.H. “This place is a true Cleveland-[area] staple. Cleveland natives know corned beef, and [this deli] has the best Reuben money can buy!”
Not messing with success, Express serves a classic corned beef sandwich with Swiss and mustard on rye, but gave the Reuben a special touch. “We didn’t like sauerkraut, but everyone told us a Reuben had to have it,” says Micho. “So we dried it, seasoned it, and tightly rolled it in a pita with a bit of house-made garlic mayo for a ‘Lebanese touch.’ ” Other popular wraps: Turkey and Pepperoni, with garlic mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, provolone cheese, and a zesty house dressing made by Maha; and Beirut Chicken, with garlic mayo, pickled turnips, coleslaw, and Sriracha, which Micho says reminds him of Lebanese street food.

Yelpers say: “After learning that this was my first time here, [one of the counter staff] graciously offered me some samples of their meats—the corned beef, pastrami, and turkey. Savory and irresistible all around, so much so that when I ordered a Jumbo Reuben Wrap, I was delighted to know that I could split it between corned beef and pastrami (normally it’s all the former). And what a meaty, juicy sandwich it was. I’d gotten the jumbo thinking that I could save half of it for later, but who was I to kid myself? Of course I wolfed it all down right away.” —Yelp Elite Vincent L.

Oversized, umami-powered burgers have landed this build-your-own hotspot on the Top 100 list for the 2nd year in a row. But while burgers made with beef, chicken, fish, or falafel are the main draw, it’s chef-owner Willet Feng’s secret sauce that has fans coming back for more. Other Asian-inspired condiments include sambal (Indonesian chili sauce) mayo, kimchi relish, and a scallion aioli that “is what dreams are made of,” all of which add new flavor dimensions to the “juicy and flavorful” burger patties.
Choose from a wide range of classic and creative toppings—such as Spam, bacon, charred jalapenos, and soy serrano peppers. Customers return regularly for favorites like the Honey Badger pizza (topped with Pecorino cheese, Calabrese salami, and house-made hot honey) or to sample chef-owner Corey Belanger’s ever-changing menu of weekly specials. (“They’re always coming up with crazy new topping combos,” says Yelper Justin D.) The 100% naturally leavened dough helps make Luba’s 12-inch, thin-crust Neapolitan-style pies special, says Corey. “We don’t add any manufactured yeast, sugar, or oil—just good-quality flour, salt, water, and our sourdough starter, which we’ve had going since 2012,” he explains. “It has an earthy, nutty taste and a chewy texture that holds up to the ingredients better than other doughs.”
The Foggy Dew Mushroom pizza—with mozzarella and fontina cheese, caramelized onions, and roasted oyster mushrooms from a local farmer—“has a cult following,” Corey says. Equally popular is the Fat Lou (named for Corey’s round-as-a-pizza housecat), topped with fennel sausage and soppressata (dry-cured pork salami). Yelpers also rave about the “perfectly made, flavorful and juicy” meatball appetizer—a beef-pork combo served with house-made, slow-cooked marinara and sourdough focaccia. Leave room for the “amazing” homemade artisanal ice cream.
Pizzeria Luba was conceived during the takeout-only days of the pandemic, when Corey and his wife, Carmen, started making to-go pizzas in their backyard wood-fired oven. Word spread, demand soared, and, in 2021, the couple opened Luba, named after Corey’s great-grandmother. “She was always cooking and bringing everybody together, so it made sense for [our] cozy neighborhood bistro,” he says.

48. Sabores Tapas Bar, Arlington, Virginia

During the pandemic, a trio of friends concluded that life’s too short to not realize your dream. The result? A year-old Columbia Pike restaurant devoted to all things tapas. “It’s the [foods] we grew up with—[we] start from there and make it our own,” says Carlos Olarte, who, together with Alex López and Ernesto Valenzuela, owns and operates the tapas bar featuring dishes from their respective backgrounds in Venezuela, Colombia, and Honduras.
The menu consists of shareable Spanish and Latin American comfort foods, each with its own Sabores twist. The arepitas, for example, are fried corn cakes topped with shredded beef or shredded chicken, inspired by a dish from Venezuela. (“My Venezuelan friend says the arepitas are not only authentic, but the best he’s ever had,” Yelper William K. says.) Croquetas de Pollo (bite-sized fried croquettes with a creamy chicken filling) from Spain join larger dishes like the Chuletón Vasco, a 32-ounce ribeye steak—“a fun presentation” smoked tableside with mesquite wood chips and served with grilled potatoes and chimichurri sauce from Argentina.
An “incredible,” tapas brunch for $29.99 per person includes an unlimited stream of small plates for 2 hours. It’s a “Latin American dim sum,” Carlos explains. “Whether you’re a fan of savory Churrasco, zesty ceviche, or tender shredded beef of the Ropa Vieja, Sabores has it all,” writes Carol M.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Patatas Bravas (fried diced potatoes served with aioli and brava sauce); Churrasco with chimichurri (grilled steak with herb-based green sauce); Croquetas de Pollo; Mejillones al Vapor (steamed mussels), La Maceta de Chocolate (Chocolate Mousse Torte topped with chocolate crumbles).

49. Freeman’s Grub & Pub, Greensboro, North Carolina

This historic Greensboro gastropub continues to wow Yelpers with an eclectic menu of international comfort food, prepared with care by owners Emily and Kevin Purcell. Thanks to consistent best-sellers, ranging from the Chopped Brisket sandwich to Buffalo Fried Chicken and Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Freeman’s has landed on Yelp’s Top 100 US Restaurants list for the 2nd year in a row.
The legendary brisket, which is smoked for 2 hours and low-cooked another 14, “falls apart with a simple touch of a fork.” For the sandwich, it’s chopped up, reheated in blackberry barbecue sauce, and spread on a roll with pimento cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Freeman’s popular blackberry barbecue sauce doubles as a dunk for the Chicken Wings starter; it’s also used in a honey mustard sauce for dunking cornflake-crusted, freshly breaded chicken strips. Brisket drippings, on the other hand, become a “delicious” gravy for Poutine served with melted Wisconsin cheese curds and gravy. The team also makes their own liquor infusions (try strawberry and jalapeno tequila) and bakes Butterfinger pies (“Wow, just wow!” raves Yelper Tasha T.). “We try to be as authentic as we can,” Emily says.
The Purcells live upstairs in the historic circa-1911 building. But they credit Freeman’s staff as really helping the pub feel like a home. “It’s a beautiful thing,” Emily says. “We’re building this together.”
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Steak Banh Mi sandwich (a Vietnamese sandwich with pork or steak and pickled veggies); Chopped Brisket sandwich; Buffalo Fried Chicken sandwich; Poutine; Brussels Sprouts.
Yelpers say: “What you have here is a versatile gastropub bistro that can be whatever you’re looking for: date night ambiance, brunch recovery, or you just miss their blackberry barbecue sauce (which is completely understandable). Everything is fresh and made in-house, all the way down to the sauces. The cocktails are sharp and savory, and the menu is stacked with edibles for any palate. If you want a solid tour, grab the poutine, and then entree it up with the Banh Mi, street corn on the side.” —Yelp Elite Bob B.
50. Baja Cafe, Tucson, Arizona

This beloved breakfast spot goes through more than 375,000 eggs a year. That’s a lot of eggs, but it makes sense when you see the hour-long line on weekend mornings. All those eggs go into pancake batter, cinnamon roll French toast, hollandaise, and Baja Cafe’s ever-popular eggs Benedict dishes. (There are 13 varieties on the menu!) Owners Kim Scanlan and Gerard Meurer sold 50,000 Benedicts this year between 2 Baja Cafe locations (this one, and Baja Cafe on Campbell). To say they’ve gotten creative with eggs Benedict is an understatement: “Since opening March 2014, we’ve come up with at least 4,000 variations,” Kim says.
There’s an entire page of Bennies on the ever-changing menu, including other avant-garde creations using Southwestern ingredients. Example: the Wyatt Earp, which features a grilled green chile and cheese tamale pie topped with seared pulled pork, corn-husk-smoked bacon, fire-roasted green chiles, cheese, 2 poached eggs, avocado hollandaise, pico de gallo, and cotija cheese.
Don’t miss sweet options, like the quick-to-sell-out Liege Waffle, made with pearl sugar straight from Belgium. (“I licked the freaking plate,” confesses Yelper Ryan J.) Or their famed, “perfectly fluffy” Snickerdoodle pancake (often served free to new diners as a thank-you for visiting).

We ended up getting the Two Pan Sam Lemon Blueberry pancakes and the Wyatt Earp Benedict to share and were blown away by both. I don’t normally like pancakes but couldn’t stop eating this dish. It was sweet but tangy, with caramelization on top that provided a little sweet crunch. The Wyatt Earp—[with its] green chiles and tender pulled pork with cheese tamale pie and tomatillo sauce—was a perfect complementary plate.” —Yelp Elite David R.
51. Much Ado About Pizza, Pleasanton, California

This Shakespearean-themed artisanal-pizza spot has become so popular, fans are leaving reviews in iambic pentameter: “I come to praise a delicious pizza. One pizzeria of great dignity, In fair Pleasanton where we lay our scene.…” writes Yelp Elite Sammie L. Married co-owners Mark and Kira Zabrowksi, a pair of theater-loving teachers, opened Much Ado About Pizza last year, after Kira’s pies placed 4th in the world at a Las Vegas pizza expo. Their “excellent, just tangy enough” sourdough crust gets complex flavors from a 72-hour Italian fermentation process called a “biga.” It’s all part of the duo’s mission to make a lighter pizza that tastes great and is easier to digest. “We try to do everything with as much care as possible, from the temperature of the flour to the temperature of the dough,” Kira says.
Theater masks and Shakespearean posters adorn the small takeout-only space, while pizza names are punny takes on the Bard’s classics. The Taming of the Chew features signature half-beef, half-pork pepperoni. The “fabulous” Titania’s Bounty is an exercise in veggie excess, much of it sourced locally. It’s baked with spinach, red onion, green bell peppers, black olives and seasonal squash, then topped off with fresh broccoli, baby bell peppers, greens, tomatoes, and green onion. “You’re not going to get a pizza like that anywhere else,” Mark says.
Customers demanded an encore of the “standout” Montague, even though it was originally only planned for a limited menu run. Along with mushrooms, sausage, and pepperoni, it’s topped with buttery TomaTruffle cheese from the nearby Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. “It’s just a really good bite,” Mark says.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Taming of the Chew; Cheezy “Bard” bread served with white garlic sauce; The Capulet (with cherry tomatoes, basil, and goat cheese); The Montague; and O’thello’s O’bsession (cooked with pesto, Italian cheese, spinach, squash, and red onion, then finished with broccoli, arugula, and baby bell peppers).
Yelpers say: “Wow, this place is amazing. The pizza dough is so flavorful and tangy, I could eat it all by myself. In fact, it smelled [so] good, I inhaled 2 pieces before I got home. The cheese is also super-good; [there’s] lots of gooey cheese and some crispy cheese on the bottom. The two owners are very sweet and hospitable. The theme of the place [alone] is adorable.” —Lauren R.

53. Peace Pies, San Diego, California

To enthusiastic fans of this free-spirited raw food cafe, the soy-free, gluten-free dishes feel like “magic.” Uncooked fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts are transformed into “fresh, tasty, and creative” culinary treats with “unique flavors” that make believers out of raw-food skeptics. “I’ve never been to another food establishment that creates such healthy, delicious food,” says Yelp Elite Holly S.
Don’t be fooled, this is no salad bar. There’s “delicious” pizza on a sunflower-seed crust, topped with marinated veggies; a “savory” lasagna that features zucchini noodles layered with hemp seed pesto; and even snackable nachos made with red bell pepper chips (“closest in taste and texture to a ‘real’ chip”) topped with cashew-based meat and cheese. The “divine” Bliss Burger patty is made with sun-dried tomatoes and walnuts, topped with yellow cashew cheese and sprouts, and sandwiched between seed-based crackers. Unique drinks include a Durian Shake, a “special treat” that tames the famously pungent fruit.
Owner JP Alfred began making vegan pizza crusts and salad dressings for farmers markets in 2007 before setting up his twin vegan-only brick-and-mortar cafes in the San Diego area. One outpost was lost to a fire in 2019, but loyal customers have been making the trek to this “haven for vegans” until the old location in rebuilt.

It’s abundant with plants and greenery and truly creates a relaxing atmosphere.” —Rae S.
54. The Table, Asheboro, North Carolina

You’ll always have a seat at The Table, says owner Dustie Gregson—but you might have to wait to get it. Also appearing on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the Carolinas list for its simple, clean, and elevated take on American classics (lots of sandwiches, grain bowls, and coffee), the popular restaurant is a “hidden gem” that has helped transform downtown Asheboro.
When Dustie opened The Table in 2013 as a restaurant business newbie, she wanted to do something positive for her town. “I said, ‘The greatest thing to bring downtown is truly having a seat at the table, having people gather to eat,’” she recalls. Dustie fell in love with an old office building connected to a long-abandoned mill and, with her background in design, repurposed it into the current farm-style bakery, cafe, and restaurant.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and Saturday brunch, The Table features “delightful,” “super-hearty” house-made quiches (with seasonally changing ingredients such as broccoli and mushroom or ham and squash) and a “superb” Grits and Greens bowl, made with stone-ground grits, sauteed rainbow Swiss chard, country ham, and cheese. Both the Signature Pimento Cheese sandwich (with aged white cheddar, arugula, and tomato) and Breakfast Granola (with oats, dried cranberries, pecans, pumpkin seeds, and coconut) are recipes straight from Dustie’s mother. “These are the things I grew up with,” she says. The granola is so popular they’re now selling it online, shipping 150 bags per week.
Yelp reviewers go out of their way to note the hospitality and sense of community Dustie provides. “My mom and I waited in line and were greeted so warmly and thanked for being there,” Ryan A. says. For Dustie, it’s all part of her mission: “When [customers] walk through that door they’re coming into our home, and that’s how I want them to feel.”

Just stellar.” —Yelp Elite Leann A.
55. Curry Hyuga, Burlingame, California

Details matter at this Japanese curry outpost, which is making its 2nd annual appearance on Yelp’s Top 100 list. Chef Masayuki Tadokoro sweats the small stuff, to the point where he changes the amount of salt in his miso soup according to the season. Why? “In the summer, everything tastes lighter and your body loses more salt,” explains co-owner Nori Kojima, so Chef Masayuki adds more to the dish. In the winter, he uses less.
Opened at the height of the pandemic, Curry Hyuga has become a mini-Bay Area empire with 2 more locations, all serving traditional, “authentic-tasting” Japanese curry with your choice of chicken, pork, hard-boiled eggs, veggies, and potato croquettes. The meats are tenderized before being prepared; as a result, the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) is “perfectly cooked, with a light, crunchy batter on the outside and super-juicy pork inside,” notes Yelp Elite Leanne C.
Chef Masayuki has painstakingly fine-tuned the ratios of 21 ingredients—including lots of caramelized onions—to create the curry, based on recipes from restaurants his parents ran back in his native Japan. The dish takes 12 hours to cook and then rests for another 12, ensuring the ingredients mix and blend evenly, Nori says. “It’s not a big menu, but we make it all from scratch,” he notes.
Most popular/most photographed dishes: Signature Katsu Curry (with either chicken or pork); Karaage Chicken appetizer (Japanese fried chicken); rich, creamy Corn Potage Soup.
Yelpers say: “The hype is real here. The Signature Katsu, for example, was ever-so-lightly crispy on the outside while being both meaty, juicy, and almost melt-in-your-mouth soft on the inside. The caramelized onion-based curry sauce that it came with was rich without being too salty or heavy and would be comforting any time of year, but especially so in the colder months.” —Yelp Elite Vincent L.

57. Leven Deli, Denver, Colorado

Walking distance from the state Capitol building, Leven is taking the classic deli to Michelin-starred heights. “It’s a deli undercover,” says co-founder/owner Anthony Lygizos. To unsuspecting customers the menu looks standard, with classics like big, shareable sandwiches and leafy salads. Behind the scenes, however, Anthony and team are creating “an all-encompassing culinary experience.” “We’re taking the fine-dining approach and changing people’s perspective on the deli,” he says.
Almost every item and ingredient, right down to the stocks and mustard, are made in-house. Take the classic Pastrami Reuben, for example. The rye bread is baked fresh daily starting at 3 am. The Russian dressing, known as “Leven sauce,” is batch-made. Tangy white cabbage is quick-pickled, also in-house. And the pastrami itself, which takes 12 hours to cure and 12 hours to smoke, is part of the 1,000 pounds of meat they make every day. The only thing not made in-house is the Jarlsberg cheese, imported from Norway.
Having that much control over the food allows for flexibility, and they encourage modifications for picky eaters, Anthony says. Chef Hyun Kim is remixing and reinventing Korean cuisine at this tucked-away spot in Honolulu’s Chinatown. You’ll see traditional dishes like “made-to-perfection” Korean Chicken, fried twice for extra crispiness and lathered in spicy gochujang (red chili paste) sauce, paired with Chef Kim’s signature 10-hour kimchi and house-made Italian-style gnocchi. For her Confit Pork Belly Brulee, she uses a French confit technique on the pork instead of traditional boiling. The results? It’s “tender and tasty, not-to-miss,” Yelpers say.
Hyun’s sense of humor is on full display in items like the “innovative and delicious” Elote Ice Cream. The sweet corn ice cream is molded into an ear of corn and placed on a bed of crushed corn cereal, topped with marshmallow fluff and white chocolate to mimic butter, then dusted with strawberry powder to evoke hot sauce. Everything is made in-house, from his 2 noodle styles—thin for the tonkotsu and thick for the shoyu—to the oils and tare (seasoning for the base of ramen) that Eric uses to modulate broth flavors. Time and time again, customers call it “the best ramen I’ve ever had.”
The small, unfussy menu includes the Classic Shoyu—made from chicken broth and umami-rich dashi broth, with thick, chewy wheat noodles—and the pork-based Classic Tonkatsu, with thin noodles. There’s also Truffle Shoyu (made with truffle infused oil), “must-try” spicy Tantan, made with sesame paste and chile, and the “irresistible” Triple Threat, with a blend of all 3 signature broths (chicken, pork, and dashi). 63. Pappa Gyros, Katy, Texas

The perfect mashup of Greek cooking and Midwestern diner food can be found at this Houston-area cafe. The culinary combo is the brainchild of owner Christos “Chris” Batsios, who enjoys blending his Greek heritage with his family’s background running restaurants in Michigan. The menu features everything from a Chicago-style Italian Beef sandwich to classic Greek gyros, but some of the best dishes bring those flavors together: “There really isn’t anything better than a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich on a warm, fluffy Greek pita,” says Yelp Elite China D. Chris imports a few items from Detroit and Chicago for authenticity (such as his Italian sandwich rolls), but the rest of the menu is made in-house. Gyro meat is cooked “the old-school way,” on the rotisserie, and sliced fresh. And the “fantastic” baklava—his Grandma Flora’s recipe, with crushed walnuts encased in sweet, crispy layers of phyllo dough—routinely sells out.

64. R Town Pizza, Reno, Nevada

If something can be made into a pizza, Marvin Kinney is game to try. The founder and president of Reno’s R Town Pizza, Marvin recently concocted a red, white, and green holiday pie inspired by chiles en nogada—a traditional Mexican dish of stuffed poblano peppers in a walnut cream sauce with pomegranate-seed garnish. “We did that, but as a pizza,” Marvin says. Fans go all-in for Marvin’s creative spins, which are shared online and through a not-so-secret “secret” menu at every table. “I go in with the intention of ordering a pizza from the menu, but always get whatever the special is,” says Yelp Elite Donna B.
